Landscaping Tips For Homeowners in Florida

Due to the intense heat and sandy soils in Florida, landscaping can be a challenge for homeowners. We understand the struggle to preserve the lawn, grow a flower bed or grow a vegetable garden. Fortunately, there are resources and tips on gardening, watering, fertilizing, composting that can help you keep your garden lush and green throughout the year in the Sunshine State. Here are some of them:

1. Group Plants with Similar Needs

Always consider the amount of water and light and the type of soil your plants require, and then group them with other plants that have similar needs. Not only will this make it easier to water and fertilize your garden, but it will make it prettier and greener.

2. Build A Healthy And Balanced Ecosystem

Plant aromatic, colorful flowers will attract butterflies, birds and other animals better than the plant. Make sure you have some plants attracting birds, bees and wasps to create a balanced and healthy ecosystem. Diversify vines, flowers, palms and shrubs to provide food for different wildlife.

3. Maintain Soil Moisture

Florida has summer, November to April, and the rainy season, May to October, with scorching summer temperatures. To maintain soil moisture resulting from precipitation and irrigation, cover the gardens with a thick layer of mulch. It also helps control weeds. Also, be sure to replace hard surfaces, such as concrete pavements, with porous materials such as bricks or gravel to allow rain to drip into the ground.

4. Boost Nutrition With Compost

Florida sandy soil could use a food booster, and the easiest way to do it is to add compost. The best part? You can make it yourself. Think of it as natural recycling. Instead of throwing away leftovers such as banana peel and dried lettuce, throw them in a pile of compost. You can use a composting container that can be easily rotated to add oxygen to the decomposition process. Within a few weeks, it produces “black gold” – a supplement to the soil rich in essential nutrients. Just add it to your garden before planting or mix soil for established plants.
